Teen Miles Morales becomes Spider-Man of his reality, crossing his path with five counterparts from another dimensions to stop a threat for all realities..

Some films create such a fuss that it is almost impossible to live up to the hype. With a franchise as frayed around the edges as that of Spider-Man, said hype may even seem hyperbolic. How, exactly, can a story that has been told 100 times before truly be fresh or exciting. Well, against all odds, Spider-Man: into the Spider-verse is actually both fresh AND exciting.

Take the novelty of its aesthetic out of the way, and ignore, if you will, its voice for underrepresented groups; and at its core, you still have a fundamentally engaging narrative. The central cast are funny and likeable, the multiple Spidey’s proves to be a riotous dynamic, and the action scenes are some of the franchise’s best. Then you whip in six….yes, i said SIX…villains who each make a significant enough impression; and you’ve witnessed something not yet achieved by ANY superhero film!!

It is not a perfect film by any merit. Some scenes are a tad dull, the father/son tension seems unnecessary, and there is an underlying sense of self-importance floating about. But with a banging soundtrack and easily some of the most striking visuals your likely to see this side of sobriety; it is easy to get lost and forget cynical hangups.

The fact that Spider-Man: into the Spider-Verse was a more deserving Oscar winner than its live action peers this year, is no detriment to its overall quality. Here might well be the best animated film never to come from Pixar….I’d say Disney, but we all know that by default they own this one too.

Film Grade: A

Special Features:

How does an Alternate Cut of the film sound? Yep, there is an all but ignored second version of the film to view here, complete with commentary. Granted there are a lot of storyboards, etc, but it is an entirely different viewing experience! The rest of the materials is fun and lightweight, with a Short Film courtesy of Spider-Ham.

Special Features Grade: B+

Summary:

The first and only superhero franchise to have two (three if you consider the excellent PS4 game) equally brilliant franchises existing at once.

Overall Grade: A-
